FACTS ABOUT BECOMING A FOREIGN TEACHER
Foreign teachers (men, women, and couples) come to our college from many
countries to teach English to either first, second, or third year students. They coordinate the teaching of Speaking, Reading, and Writing into each class. Each class meets 4 hours per week, therefore, Foreign Teachers will teach 3 classes, which is a total of 12 teaching hours per week with some time spent with Free Conversation groups. Subject objectives are available upon request. Most students have been exposed to English (mainly reading and
writing) in regular school as early as 12 years old.
It is important that Foreign Teachers have a teaching credential. It does
not necessarily have to be in ESL or in English. The Provincial Education Department is now requiring all Foreign Teacher applicants to have 2 years teaching experience. However, a recent rule set forth by the Provincial Education Department requires that all new applicants have a TESOL or TESL certificate in order to be accepted to teach. Basic, sound
teaching practices must be demonstrated and conformity to curriculum
standards is advised.
Knowing the Chinese language is not necessary since only English is spoken by
Foreign Teachers in their classes. However, many teachers choose to learn
Chinese while in residence in China.

the cost can range from $710 US to $1200 US).
6 When you arrive at Hwa Nan, the FAO will arrange a more thorough medical examination at a well organized, clean medical clinic. It will include a chest x-ray (if you have had one recently, bring the x-ray with you and the doctor's written diagnosis of the X-ray), urine test, ultra sound of abdomen area, EKG (heart), and a general blood test.
7. As an independent, the Foreign Teacher will receive the stipend of 2000 yuan
at the beginning of each month. This is in addition to free room, board, and

The economy in China is quite stable. Travel, merchandise, and food are
inexpensive, therefore, 2000 yuan can go a long way. Also outside teaching
opportunities are available to earn extra yuan. If questions persist or
