CURRICULUM OF STUDY AND TEACHING SCHEDULE

As the first accredited private women's college established in China, Hwa Nan's principal goal is to create greater opportunities for women to contribute to the modernization of their country. Both the college and its graduates serve as models of successful leadership training for women throughout China.

Because Hwa Nan is privately funded, it is able to adopt a more flexible approach in the development of its curricula. Innovative educational programs are incorporated into a three-year course of study.

Department of Food and Nutrition
The curriculum aims to train students into professional jobs as dieticians to serve individuals and institutions in matters of diet and nutrition as they relate to health care. Food technology, public relations, food hygiene, packing, food analysis, Biochemistry, computer, and internship are some required courses.
Department of Clothing and Design
Students are trained to translate their creative ideas into current fashions as well as in management of all phases of the apparel manufacturing industry. Fashion history, textiles, design, color, tailoring, business management, law, sketching, computer, and economics are a few of the required courses.
Early Childhood Education Department
The objective of the department is to enhance understanding of child development , theory and practice of teaching, and foster supervisory and research skills as primary child care providers. A few of the required courses are: piano, Psychology, Health care and Pediatrics, Tests and Measurements, and internship.
Department of Applied English
Students are trained to be proficient in speaking, listening, writing and reading the English language. Courses in translation and interpretation from Chinese into English, knowledge of business, typing, foreign trade, public relations, computer, business law, and marketing are some required courses.
International Tourism Administration
Students are prepared to be international tour guides and directors/administrators of tourism agencies. They learn travel advertising, financial planning, transportation and arranging travel schedules. Psychology and leadership training are components of the program. The students must be proficient in English as well as the use of computers.
Community Service Management
The curriculum aims at training students for public service in various areas of society. Courses include: Sociology, Social Psychology, Economics, Social Work (elderly, disaster victims, poor), Nutrition, Public Relations, Human Resources and Social Welfare. The students are required to take English and must learn management skills to be prepared for directing community agencies.
International Economics & Trade
This course of study is basically the science concerned with the production and consumption or use of goods and services as it pertains to worldwide banking and economic policies within various governments. The courses include international trade laws and codes of practice.
Business English
Since English is the international language, students must learn the vernacular of foreign trade in not only commmerce, industry and agriculture but also in the area of negotiation, transaction, and business.

Scheduling of classes is the responsibility of the Department Chairperson. The length of a class is one hour and fifty minutes. Students bring their own paper, pens, and notebooks. The school year is based on two semesters with the dates of the break between semesters being directly related to the Lunar New Year which changes each year. Foreign Teachers teach 12 to 14 hours per week.
