STUDENT ADMISSION AND ENROLLMENT
Hwa Nan's entering students are all female, mostly 18 to 19 years old. They are all from Fujian Province, some from rural areas but most from large cities. The scores received on the National College Entrance Examination given in June to senior high school students determine the college or university they can attend. In Fujian in 1998, 74,640 students took the exam but only 37,800 qualified to enter a college or university. Since Hwa Nan is a three-year college, it is considered a technical career-oriented higher education institution that awards diplomas rather than degrees. However, as you read this, plans are being made to offer a Bachelor's Degree within the next two years which would change the college to a four year institution. Hwa Nan Departments and Student Numbers (2007-8)
Each year's entering students are placed in a class of 25 to 35 students. They take their courses and carry out school activities as a unit. Students remain with the same class throughout their three years along with an advisor chosen from the full-time teaching faculty.
The true Hwa Nan spirit is captured in:
The motto of Hwa Nan : "Receive in order to Serve" FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION Policy and major operational decisions are made by a seven-member Leadership Committee under the direction of the President. All but one are alumnae of old Hwa Nan and played major roles in its resurrection. The members are the President, Vice President, Head of Political Affairs, Head of Personnel, Office Director, and two Deans. Full-time teaching faculty numbers 63 (men and women)consisting of Professors, Associates, Assistants and Trainees. Faculty development includes further education in both USA and China universities. Foreign ESL teachers vary in number each year from 12 in 2004, 12 in 2006, and 13 in 2007. |
